  • Hi there, I am trying to find out the name of a science teacher at Pixmore Secondary in the mid-1950s. He was @ Pixmore for just a few years, in his mid-late 20s, and his wife also taught @ Pixmore, perhaps literature or language. My husband, Anthony E Palmer was a student @ Pixmore in 1954-55, had this science teacher, who would tell such interesting stories, no one wanted to go out for lunch/recess, and the teacher opened up Anthony’s mind to science and history. This teacher eventually moved to Toronto, Canada, to teach mathematics @ University of Toronto. My husband and I ran into this same teacher and his wife on a cruise to Bermuda; we never caught his name, but I did get to tell him how my husband loved and remembered him as a great teacher…What a small world, right? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • I used to live in Barford farm in 2006 a friend was devolving the site I stayed in the house for a year looking after it

I had many strange things happen

The lights used to flicker in the front room most nights

I had a karaoke amp I use to sing on

Other strangest thing was it started talking German to me like a faint radio stationit then started to get louder and louder I thought my amp was faulty I took it apart to check if their was a radio circuit in it

But it was only an amp

This happened many times I didn’t know what to think

I went to bed one night at the back of the house only to be woken up in the middle of the night with the light on and cold winds in a sealed room. I couldn’t turn the light of it was very strange I went back to bed 5 min later the light went off and the room returned back to Normal temp

I tried to search the council records to see what the history was of site in 2006 their was very little

Now I seen this site I now understand why the Germans voices came

It was because we where digging up the plot

I was wondering if anyone had died on the camp and how because I believe theirs a loose spirt of Germany consent

Would like to speak with someone if intersted

  • Since moving to Hertfordshire in 2014, I have been researching my local area which leads me to a book I have been reading ‘When the ‘chute went up by Dolly Shepherd’, an amazing book by a extraordinary woman, Dolly (birth name Elizabeth) was born in Potters Bar in the late 1880s and moved to Southgate when she was still very young where she grew up for part of her life. Dolly was a Famous Female Entertainer Parachutist in the Edwardian era, she was 16 years old when she started and later in life went to France with the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in WW1 and was a Mechanic.  Her book is an amazing read and I hope there is information on the Herts Memories website about her life. I myself have decided to write my own blog post on my blogsite about her and her book, as it is great tribute to these entertainers of the Edwardian age, mostly young women, who would of been around the inventors of one person holding on to a trapeze bar during balloon travel and experimenting with air travel before aircraft travel as we know it.  I hope she is honoured somewhere either in Hertfordshire or Enfield like she is in Ashby By Del Zouch.

  • I was sent an article ‘Commemorating the Heroes of World War 1. It referred to a John Wackett talking about his father Joseph Wackett.

As this was my maiden name I just wondered if there is a way of getting in touch with this Hertfordshire family?

    Many thanks.
