Gunner Saville of Hertford was part of the 1st Hertfordshire Battery, Royal Field Artillery. He is shown here soon after he had enlisted, wearing his new blue ‘walking out’ uniform.

1st Hertfordshire Battery was mobilised on the outbreak of war in August 1914 as part of 4th East Anglian Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. After a short period in action in France, the brigade moved to Egypt early in 1916 and later played a distinguished part in the battles of Gaza in 1917 and General Allenby’s victorious advance through Palestine 1917-18.
