Thomas Young, a draper from Watford, died in 1898 aged 105. He lived in the town from 1819 and opened a business in the High Street from which he retired in 1872. He also served as a churchwarden, as well as other local offices and took a keen interest in all parish matters. Apart from deafness due to old age, he enjoyed perfect health. He was described as bright, cheerful and active; he shaved himself, could read without glasses and enjoyed a game of whist and a mutton chop for breakfast.
