A view from the Salisbury Arms

Hertford market in the 1880s
Arthur Elsden [Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies]

This is a wonderful view of the market place which must have been taken from the window of The Salisbury Arms.  There are lots of bemused men in bowler hats standing around probably wondering what the photographer is up to.  The photo was taken by Arthur Elsden who had a studio in Hertford for over 60 years.  His images are of such high quality for the time.

The view is virtually unchanged today and occasionally the site for a farmers’ market.
