I started my schooling at Abel Smith in September 1939 just at the outbreak of the Second World War
The Headmaster was Major Upton who was very strict. My firm teacher was Miss Peacock who loved history and later became a head of an infants school In Bishops Stortford The other very strict teacher was Miss Peck who taught girls needlework
We walked to school and back and also at dinner time. So we’re very fit. No cars on the road except army lorries
I won a scholarship to Ware Grammar school
Two friends of mine are still friends and we are all in our nineties!

Yes you are correct in saying it is Malcolm Oakman
