Lord Desborough's Olympic scrapbook

A unique volume

A page from Lord Desborough's scrapbook
Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies

The moving spirit behind Britain’s offer to host the Games was the remarkable and charismatic Lord Desborough. Throughout the lead-up to the Olympics and during the running of the Games, Lord Desborough compiled his own personal scrapbook with pages packed full of newspaper cuttings, private letters, notes, illustrations and cartoons. It is a unique volume containing a vast amount of material. On reading through the pages it becomes apparent just how large a part Lord Desborough played in the staging of the 1908 Olympics.
