Life in the Workhouse

One-day workshop, Hertfordshire Archives & Local Studies, Monday 18 July 2011

Women in a workhouse picking oakum

From 10am to 4pm

Many of our ancestors are likely to have spent some time in the workhouse. This practical course will show you the sources to use to discover what life was like for poor people in the past.

It is very hard to understand what the people who lived in workhouses had to go through. However, this workshop is to give just an insight into their lives and exactly how terrible it was.

Refreshments are not provided on these study days, but you are welcome to bring a packed lunch. A hot drinks machine is available.

Cost £30
