Re “Train at Welwyn Station, the southern terminus”, this photo shows what is now Welwyn North station c.1907, not Welwyn Garden City–the southern terminus–which did not get a station until 1926. The station at WGC is larger. I think both the Hertford and Luton branches ran from Hatfield and diverged from the main line to the east and west at what is now Welwyn Garden City.
the station is looking very sad compared to its heyday. The station house was lived in by a BR worker at least into the 60s as far as I remember. it was very remiss of BR to let the property fall into disrepair and then demolished. The last station master I believe was a Mr Millan who some time later worked at Liverpool Street
I believe that this photograph is of Hertingfordbury Station not Cole Green. Cole Green had two platforms with a large wooden building with a waiting room and ticket office. This can be very briefly seen in the film “The Lady With The Lamp”
this story may amuse readers and was reported in the Hertfordshire Mercury at the time although I do not have the date. One of the crew of a goods train alighted near Cole Green station to do some “poaching” but when spotted presumably by a gamekeeper or the like ( much of the land is owned by Hatfield House) the driver made off leaving the other person behind
This photo appears to be of Welwyn North station, looking north (towards the tunnels) and not the southern terminus of the Hertford line, which was at Welwyn Garden City, a couple of miles to the south.
