Turn back time - Fore Street as it was in the past and how it is today

The changes in Hertford's High Street

By Fiona MacDonald

Fore Street was shown on early maps as ‘Highe Stret’ and is the town’s main thoroughfare, wider than any of the other old streets.

Images from the archives shown alongside photographs taken in 2010 show how it has evolved over time. Some things remain the same while others have changed beyond recognition.

  • I was ‘billeted’ to Norwood 1943 – 1945 (war’s end) as an evacuee from London. As a 7year old boy, Iin 1943, I walked all over the town of Hertford and knew the streets from Hertingfordbury to Horns Mill! I played at the Hartham, stole toys from shops in Maidenhead Street, and swung on the swings on the grounds of The Castle. ‘I ‘bunked’ in (without paying) to the County Cinema and the Castle. I was in the cast of the Mikado performed at the Corn Exchange. Attended school located in Cowbridge.

  • My Great aunt worked for Mr Roberts at the Thistleddo as a cleaner. Though I never met her the family stories of how Mr Roberts treated her are all good ones.
