Hoddesdon Heritage Weekend

Friday 23rd-Sunday 25th April 2010

To celebrate St George’s Day and Shakespeare’s birthday a weekend of events is taking place in Hoddesdon around the theme of local history and heritage.

Friday 23rd April

BORED BY THE BARD
a Let’s Do Lunch event at Broxbourne Civic Hall presented by BArts at 12 noon. (This event is sold out.)

Saturday 24th April

Lee Valley U3A Family Tree History Display and Advice Desk
FREE 10.30am-3pm Mayhem Theatre Arts, Brewery Road

Find out more about ‘Our Broxbourne’ the new community website which is part of this Herts Memories network of sites inviting local people to share their memories of the Borough by contributing experiences and photographs online. There will also be local history displays and drop in advice sessions.
FREE 9am-4pm Hoddesdon Library.

Hoddesdon Newsreel – FREE showings of the wonderful black and white films shot by local resident Tom Franklin in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
11am, 12.30pm and 2pm Mayhem Theatre Arts, Brewery Road.

Sunday 25th April

Hoddesdon’s Historic High Street – FREE walk starting at 10.30am Lowewood Museum led by local historians Peter and Sue Garside. Sue is author of Hoddesdon: A History.

Meet The Author – Dr Nick Barratt from TV’s Who Do You Think You Are, talks about his new book ‘A GUIDE TO YOUR ANCESTOR’S LIVES – A practical guide for family historians’. This event concludes with an Ask The Expert session featuring Dr Jill Barber, Director of Hertfordshire Archives, who joins Nick to answer audience questions relating to their personal researches.

Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th April

Lowewood Museum open 10am-4pm with new exhibition by the Friends of Lowewood Museum WHO LIVED IN A HOUSE LIKE THIS? highlighting the history of historic buildings in the town and people who lived in them. HERITAGE TRAIL COMPETITION – everyone can take part in a quiz based on buildings featured on the Hoddesdon Heritage Trail. Entry forms available from Museum reception to be returned there by 4pm on Sunday. the winning family will receive a museum heritage booklet. Museum entry is FREE.

The programme is co-ordinated by Broxbourne Arts Forum (BArts) and Books@Hoddesdon in partnership with Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies (HALS), Hoddesdon Library and The Lowewood Museum.
