In the early years of the Garden City processions were a common feature of Letchworth life. One of the largest was May Day, which was held annually from 1906.

Various organisations took part such as the Guild of Help and the Independent Labour Party who paraded their banners to identify who they were. Often local artists would design the banners, some being simple designs and some being elaborate pieces of art.
