Cycling trip to Houghton Mill 1963

By Roderick Charles

Mr Langdon-Davis, our geography teacher (a wonderful man as well as a good teacher), was a keen cyclist and organised Youth Hostelling trips.  This photo was of the trip to Houghton Mill; an exciting place to stay as a boy; sleeping in amongst all the cogs and machinery – not working, I hasten to add!  He set up this photo on the day we left.  The friends that I remember are – back row middle, Hans Deamer and front row from left, 2nd – Richard Knight, 3rd – Clive Kearley and 4th is me – Rod Charles.

  • Very pleased to see this. Did not have any photos of Houghton Mill YHA which I well remember. Like others think this is more like 1960 than 1963. Remember also the Isle of Wright tour. I did this with a broken arm with all the YHA Hostel stamps on the plaster – was very proud of this, but had to plead with the excellent Mr Langdon Davis to let me cycle on the trip with a broken arm. Would very much like to hear from others re these far off but wonderful days.

  • Never knew this existed. I’m on front row right looking towards camera. Couple of names I remember was surname Perry on left hand side in front of Mr Langdon and I think a but my memory may be wrong. I don’t think this is 1963? I left Norton 62 and cycling to Houghton Mill Youth Hostel which is this picture I think was pre-cursor to our cycling to Isle of Wight via Youth Hostels one summer. I think this would have been 1960.
