My childhood in Letchworth

By Beatrice Agnes

I was born in Hoddesdon in 1962 and moved to Letchworth with my parents in 1964. We used to live in Glebe Road and my younger sister and brother were born there. I have many happy memories of my childhood in Letchworth during the years between 1964 and 1976. I went to St Nicholas Primary School and afterwards to Norton Secondary School.

My parents moved to Letchworth because there was a good industrial area with lots of factories where they found jobs. I don’t remember the names of the factories but my mum worked in a rubber factory and my dad in a factory that made furniture and later at ICL.

In 1976 we moved to Italy, my parents were italian and wanted to go back home.

  • I too am interested in the Hertfordshire Rubber Company as my Grandfather was Company Secretary of it for many years. I have so far been unable to find any photographs of it in the 1950s or early 1960s

  • The rubber factory would have been Herts Rubber Company on the corner of Works Road and Dunham’s Lane, later named Herts Poymer Products.
The furniture factory would have been Meredews in Dunhams Lane, opposite the K&L Foundry.
