The Aubreys at Hemel Hempstead Road, Redbourn was built by the celebrated hatter G. E. Dunn. His Humber car stands outside. The Aubreys looked like this in the 1950’s. It is now a Ramada Hotel.

My grandfather, Harold Grey, was for many years a chauffeur to Mr Dunn. I guess the Humber in the photo must be the vehicle he drove.
This must be where i stayed i lived in Shoreditch.
I’m sure this is where my family (mum, dad, my four brothers and I) stayed during the 1950s. We lived in the east end of London and the Aubreys was used as a holiday home by the council for poor families who couldn’t otherwise afford a holiday. I would be interested to learn more or hear from others who holidayed here.
I believe some children from London were evacuated here during the war.
I am trying to find out what the house was used for during the 1939 -1945 ww2 as I believe it had a military connection.
Whilst sorting through some old photos belonging to my late parents I came across a photo of a house with the words “The Aubreys, Redbourn 1941” on the back. Not having any connections in Hertfordshire I thought I would google this. On the photo all the windows and doors of the house are open!
