Sopwell Memories

The Sopwell Memories Project managed by the Sopwell Residents Association (SRA) began life in 2009 when keen members of the committee started to map the historical sites and events in Sopwell, an ancient manor south of St Albans. Memories of what the area was like when they were young were collected from the residents and added to the research. In 2012, the SRA published this research in Sopwell, a history and collection of memories [ISBN 978-0-9567399].

Following the success of the publication, in 2013 the SRA obtained a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund under the All Our Stories fund to continue this research. Many residents and past residents contributed more memories in the form of edited oral history recordings and photographs. Numerous images and maps of the area have also been added. The outcome was an interactive website: www.sopwellmemories.org.uk. To date over 40 people have been interviewed resulting in 166 posts about all things Sopwell.
