New Road & the village pond

Woolmer Green

By Emma Pearce

The photographs show various views of the village pond along New Road in the early 1900s.

The Pond has long been one of the village’s main assets and in the past was used as a watering hole for both people and livestock.

Carts would be driven into the pond in order to swell the wood of their wheels so that the metal tires stayed firmly in place.

When winters were harsher the pond would frequently freeze over and older residents remember, as children, skating on it’s frozen surface.
