Hoddesdon residents celebrate
By Jane Toyne

These pictures show the celebrations that took place on Tuesday 21st June 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee.

The celebrations began with a Thanksgiving Service followed by a parade with a band. A large marquee situated in the High Street in Hoddesdon held a public dinner and tea for over 1,300 local people. Sports were held in the cricket field near Rose Hill and a bonfire and fireworks completed the celebrations.   The High Street was adorned with flags, and the residents of Hoddesdon came out to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

I love the photos of Hoddesdon, especially the marquee with all the benches in. I can just feel the warm damp atmosphere with all the benches and trailing greenery that must have taken hours to set up.
