The River Lea at Ware

Early Memories
By Ian Fisher

I can remember back to around 1948 when the Lea at Ware looked very different. The river was still being used to carry malted barley into London and the hundred ton barges were often moored side by side. Many were still horse drawn and us boys had to duck under the rope as the horse passed. On the bank, just before the bridge, telegraph poles were stacked which we would use as a playground. Adjacent to the towpath, a few hundred yards from the bridge, in the direction of Hertford, was Gliksten's timber yard. Bargeloads of timber were brought out from London to be stored there during and for sometime after the war.
