Friday 24th December 1841

Rose at ½ past 8. After Breakfast went to the farm. Stayed there until 12. Came home. In the afternoon went to the farm. In the evening we had some famous fun with Snap Dragon and different games.*

*Snap Dragon was one of the most popular Victorian Christmas games that has since lost favour, probably for reasons of safety. A shallow bowl filled with brandy and currants was set alight, with players trying to grab and eat as many currants as possible.

Saturday 25th December 1841

Rose at ½ past 8. After Breakfast went to Church. I did not go out in the afternoon because in the evening we were going to Lady Colville’s. We went there and enjoyed ourselves very much. We had Snap Dragon again and we danced and amused ourselves with leaping.

Sunday 26th December 1841

Rose at ½ past 8. After Breakfast went to Church. I did not go out in the afternoon. Let my new bird and Crocus fly about the room, which they enjoyed very much. They are pretty tame.
