Tuesday 5th October 1841

Rose at ½ past 7. After Breakfast went down to Balie’s. I took Fairy with me. In the Afternoon we all walked to see Totty and then we went to one of the cottages to see a little lame squrrel. I have some thoughts of buying it.

Wednesday 6th October 1841

Rose at ½ past 7. After Breakfast took Fairy out on the lawn. I went to ask the garden boy how much his squirrel cost. In the afternoon walked with Miss Smart to the garden and to the farm.

Thursday 7th October 1841

Rose at ½ past 7. After Breakfast stayed in the house with grandmama and Aunt Amelia. In the afternoon walked to the cottage where the squrrel I intended to buy was. I bought it and brought it home in a basket

Friday 8th October 1841

Rose at ½ past 7. After Breakfast stayed in in the morning to look for the Squrrel which got loose in the Great library up the curtains. In the afternoon, stayed in it was so dull, so I read and played with my little squirrel, I have named it Minette.

Saturday 9th October 1841

Rose at ½ past 7. After Breakfast stayed in with the little Squirrel which is very amusing and always up to some tricks which are highly entertaining. In the afternoon Fairy had her picture taken by Mr Beethum who is staying here and is going to make me a little present of her likeness.

(The misspellings of Squirrel are deliberate.)
