12th June 1716

Talk of the Prince’s regency.  Mademoiselle Schulenberg here about her title.  My Lord’s opinion & Lord Chief Justice’s all wrong.

26th June 1716

Baron Bernstorff comes.  I tell him all the Princess says.  He promises his endeavours but fears the King will not come [to terms with the Prince] but will see to put off the going that day to the House.  Goes to the Princess, then the Prince, then to me.  Says he does not find the Prince plyant.  Goes again, makes me write to Lord Cowper to come away.  The Prince consenteth what Lord Cowper does.  Lord Cowper goes with Baron Bernstorff to the King.  Lord Sunderland & Lord Townshend would have the Prince brought to new terms since he has agreed to the other.  Lord Cowper opposes it.  Lord Sunderland would have that part relating to the Prince struck out of the speech.  Carry’d against Lord Sunderland.  Baron Bernstorff comes to tell me all’s well.  Goes to the Prince & makes all up, then goes to the Princess & tells the remainder of the news which I had been order’d to tell…

28th June 1716

Go out to Mrs Clayton, hear there of a new broyl.  They insist on new terms.  Lord Cowper dines with Lord Townshend.  The King angry.  Insists on humbling the Prince & making him part with Argyle, Islay &c.  Will come to new terms, or send over for Prince Ernest & make him Guardian of the Realm & Duke of York.  I wish to give advice.  They’re all mad, & for their own Private Ends will destroy all.

29th June 1716

Go into the little Princesses’ apartment.  Princess there, all in flame – then to Lady Essex Robartes.  Mademoiselle Schutz there.  Thinks obedience in children necessary.  Lord Sunderland a knave.  Try to gain Lord Townshend.  The Prince will support Argyle, try to appease.
