Flames, Voyage into the Unknown

Flame

My idea for this flame covered bowl came after my reading of the story of the Witterwrong family, Flemish Protestants fleeing from Ghent and the flames of tyrannical persecution being carried out in the name of Phillip of Spain and the Catholic Church in the Low Countries in 1564, to the safety of Queen Elizabeth the Firsts England.

To emphasise this I have placed a small representation of a Lutheran Bible amongst the flames.

Voyage into the Unknown

This white silk sail shaped bowl represents the series of ill fated voyages made by Sir George Clifford, Earl Of Cumberland, Queens Champion, spirited courtier unlucky gambler and Privateer in his 600 ton fighting ship ‘The Malice Scourge’ in the 1590s. Working with silk fibres and machine embroidery.

Jackie’s career has been one dedicated to good design and art since entering artschool in the early 60s. She enjoyed a successful career as a graphic designer in London for many years, but always continued drawing and sketching. She became a full time artist in 1998, with first her City and Guild’s certificate, and continued with her degree in textile art from Middlesex University as part of the Opus School. Since then she has exhibited regularly, along with other textile artists in the prestigeous Prism group shows in the Mall Galleries London and at Knit and Stitch, also in many other exhibitions around the country. A number of pieces of her work are now in the Ahmanson Collection in America. Her skills lie not only in her excellent sewing ability but her love of problem solving and the whole process of researching and creating pieces on a wide range of themes. She has been commissioned to design and make many eclesiastical vestments and alter frontals, and is currently working on a Mothers’ Union banner for St Albans Cathederal.
