A Family At War

By Jackie Hodgson

I have chosen the story of a family divided by the English Civil War. Edward Radcliffe was a staunch Royalist, while his wife Ann was a devout Puritan and Parliamentary supporter. He spent a long time hiding from the Roundhead army, while she purchased barrels of gunpowder and a drum for them and also nursed their wounded. My piece represents each side of this family at war. I worked with machine embroidery onto dissolvable material and felt, applied to each side of a hat styled from that period.
