Friends Families and Travellers Awards 2020

Hertfordshire has a rich heritage of Travelling communities, whether Gypsy, Roma, Showpeople or other Travellers. Whether or not we’re Travellers, many of us have memories of these communities. When I was growing up in Cheshunt in the Sixties, I recall a fair that used to winter each year just round the corner from where I lived, brightening up the gloomy winter months.

Although there’s always been prejudice, the county has had champions of the communities. Perhaps the best known was the romantic novellist Barbara Cartland, who as a member of the County Council campaigned for the rights of Travellers, especially where children’s education was concerned.

On 6th March, the Friends Families and Travellers organisation will be hosting an awards ceremony to celebrate inspiring individuals who have made a special contribution to society and their own communities. Nominations are open for:

  • Inspirational Young Person
  • Arts, Culture and Heritage Award
  • Sporting Excellence Award
  • The Education Award
  • Inspirational Project Award
  • Alexander Award for Lifetime Achievement

If you know anyone you feel deserves one of these awards, you can nominate them on the Friends Familes and Travellers website.
