To the Rainbow Flag: Words of Welcome, by Jim McManus.
Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies, Off Acc 1945.

At Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies, we are dedicated to representing all aspects of Hertfordshire’s long and fascinating history. LGBTQ+ people are part of this history, although their lives and stories are often lost in archives as they had to keep their identities hidden for so long.

We are keen to expand our history and our collections, and we would love your help. We have created this section on Herts Memories to share your own stories and memories if you are comfortable.

Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies also created our dedicated LGBTQ+ archive collection in 2019. The first item we accessioned was a speech titled “To the Rainbow Flag: Words of Welcome” written by Jim McManus, Director of Public Health at Hertfordshire County Council. Jim McManus read this speech during the first raising of the rainbow flag over County Hall in August 2019.

If you have items you would like to donate to our collection to help our representation of LGBTQ+ people and histories in the county, then please get in touch with us at hals.enquiries@hertfordshire.gov.uk. This could be anything you think is relevant, from flags, fliers and posters from Pride events, to items related to queer spaces in bars and clubs, to personal mementos.
