Letter 10 from Alessandro Volta to George 3rd Earl Cowper

Trasmetto a V.A. per mezzo del Corriere, come ha desiderato, il Compendio di Fisica del Sig. Atwood tradotto dal nostro Padre Fontana. Questo è un prodromo di un’opera grande che l’autore ci promette, e che fornirà tre tomi in quarto: il prospetto di associazione già stampato ci fa sperare che uscirà presto. Sento però dal Sig. Magellan che sarà preceduta da un’altr’opera a parte sopra la nuova Macchina di Dinamica inventata dall’istesso Sig. Atwood: che è quella di cui le scrissi ultimamente.

L.Eudiometro è quasi finito. Spero di inviarlo a V.A. unitamente alla seconda parte della mia dissertazione, la quale Ella potrà mandare alla Società Reale di Londra, se la stima degna. Intanto io sospendo di pubblicarla ricordevole di ciò che mi disse, che non sarebbe più tanto gradita a quell’Accademia, se la si presentasse dopo essere già stampata.

Rinnovando gl’atti del mio più ossequioso rispetto sì a Lei che a Myledi, con i complimenti ancora del Marchese Torelli, che fu mio compagno l’anno scorso nel viaggio di Toscana, mi raffermo di V.A.

I am sending to Your Highness by courier as you wished the Compendium of Physics of Mr Atwood translated by our Father Fontana¹. This is a harbinger of a great work that the author promises us, and that he will produce three volumes in quarto: the prospectus that has already been printed makes us hope that it will be brought out soon. I have however heard from Mr Magellan that this will be preceded by another work about the new Dynamic apparatus invented by the same Mr Atwood: which is the one I wrote about to you recently.

The Eudiometer is almost finished. I hope to send it to Your Highness with the second part of my dissertation, which you could send to the Royal Society in London, if you deem it worthy. In the mean time, I will stop publishing it mindful of what you told me, that it will not be pleasing to the Society, if it is presented after it has already been printed.
