Letter 3 from Alessandro Volta to 3rd Earl Cowper

Ier l’altro solamente ho ricevuto la lettera di V.A.del 29 passato, che mi è stata mandata da Como a Pavia. Ella già intende che mi è convenuto aderire alle premure della Corte, ed accettare la carica di Professore in questa Università, senza troppo ascoltare gl’interessi di mia casa. Dirò pur anche che ho ceduto all lusinga di trovare qui maggiori mezzi di promuovere i miei studj, e le mie sperienze: il trovare un buon corredo di macchine di Fisica mi è di un grande aiuto, e di gran soddisfazione; il pensare ad accrescerlo di gran compiacenza: così la Corte voglia secondare le mie idee, che non mancherò di progettare sempre per ingradirlo, ed arricchirlo anche di macchine di nuova invenzione.

Se, come V.A. mi fa sperare arrivo di essere fatto Socio dall Accademia di Londra, io ne andrò oltre modo superbo di quest’onore. Conoscerò però sempre che lo debbo assai più che al mio merito, alla raccomandazione ed opera di V.A.

 Mi ha fatto gran piacere il sentire che Le abbiano incontrato le mie osservazioni sulla capacità de’ Conduttori elettrici; e ch’Ella le abbia già in parte verificate sostituendo al conduttore di due braccia e mezzo un altro di quattro in cinque piedi. Quando abbia messi alla prova I lunghi bastoni inargentati, che mi dice aver già ordinati, avrò ancora più gran piacere se vorrà informarmi come riescano.

Giacchè V.A. Ha fatto tutto in grande per l’Elettricità, e la Macchina, e l’Elettroforo, bramerei pure che allungasse anche il mio nuovo Conduttore di verghe inargentate fino a quattrocento o cinquecento piedi almeno, quando pure non Le piaccia di mandare ad effetto l’idea che ho proposta di quel Conduttore smisurato di molte file di bastoni, che agguaglierebbe negli effetti una buona batteria, ammazzando animali ec.

Io mi rallegro poi che V.A. possegga una macchina a cilindro così potente. Molto più mi compiaccio che abbia fatto costruire un elettroforo di così vasta mole, il quale produca effetti così poderosi. Non mi meraviglio di questi, avendoli predetti allorchè progettai un Elettroforo grandissimo, ed esortai qualche Grande a farne l’esecuzione. V.A. finalmente ha sodisfatto ai miei desiderj. Or però un altro desiderio mi nasce forse più vivo, ed è di veder io questo Elettroforo, e come è fatto lo scudo, e che congegno Ella ha immaginato per alzarlo ed abbassarlo convenientemente Ardirò io pregar La di mandarmene una descrizione?

Vorrei poter ardire più innanzi e domandarLe licenza di pubblicare negli Opuscoli Scelti la descrizione, che me favorisce. La sua gran Macchina a cilindro, e la Batteria mi darebbero pur anche gran piacere, se potessi vederle. Chi sa un giorno…

Il massimo contento sarebbe di conoscere di persona V.A. e inchinandoLe protestarle a voce l’alta stima e divozione con cui ora ho l’onore solamente di sottoscrivermi di V.A.

It is only yesterday that I received Your Highness letter of the 29th of the last month which has been sent to me from Como to Pavia. You already know that it is convenient for me to agree to the favour of the court and accept the position of Professor in this university without paying too much attention to much to the interest of my household. I would also add that I gave in to the enticement of finding there more means of furthering my studies and my experiments; of finding a good set of Physics apparatus which is of great help and great satisfaction to me; thinking of increasing it is also very appealing: provided that the Court would approve of my ideas which I will do my best to draw up with the aim of extending and improving (the facilities) with newly invented instruments.

If, as Your Highness leads me to hope, I become a Member of the Royal Society in London I will be exceedingly proud of this honour. However, I will always be aware that I will owe it more to the recommendation and interest of Your Highness than to my ability.

 It has pleased me greatly to hear that you have been successful confirming my observations on the capacity of electric conductors and that you have already in part verified them by substituting the conductors of two and a half ells* with another of four to five feet. Once you have tried the long silver plated rods that you said you have already ordered, I will be even more pleased if you can inform me how they turn out

Since Your Highness has set up large machinery to deal with electricity and the Electrophorus, I would be very interested if you would also lengthen my new conductor of silver-plated rods up to at least four or five hundred feet, even though you do not like to implement the idea that I proposed of that huge conductor comprising rows of rods that would be equal in its effects to a good battery capable of killing animals etc.

I am also pleased that Your Highness owns a machine with such a powerful cylinder and even more that you have had built such a large Elettroforo which produces such powerful results. I am not surprised about these having predicted them when I planned a very large Elettroforo and I asked for a patron to have it built. Your Highness has eventually satisfied my wishes Now, however, I have an even stronger wish and that is to see for myself this Elettroforo and how the shield is made and what device you have thought of to lift it and lower it conveniently. Could I be so bold as to beg You to send me a description of it?

 I would like to be even bolder and ask your leave to publish in the Opuscoli Scelti the description that you will send me of Your machine with the cylinder and the battery which I would also be very happy if I could see. Who knows one day….

The greatest happiness would be to meet Your Highness personally and to profess loudly my high estimation and devotion which now I can only undersign as your very humble, devoted and respectful servant.
