Letter 6 from Alessandro Volta to George 3rd Earl Cowper

Milan 6 July 1779

By Gill Cordingley & Maria Porter

Volta is sending Cowper a version of the portable lighter which he has invented. There are many problems with getting it to work.

Altezza

Your Highness

I am sending to Your Highness via the courier the apparatus that I promised you; that is the lighter that I hope that you will receive in good condition. The flammable gas is already inside; so that if you would like to try it you only have to put water in the top glass bowl; to place the pipe with the hanging ball in its place (that is to secure it to the pipe that juts out from the tap): and turning the key so that the passage of water in a continuous flow from the top bowl is open to the lower one full of flammable gas: give it an electric spark to the hanging ball, with this spark jumping from the extremity of the brass thread (insulated as you can see) on the lip of the pipe, making that flammable gas become a kind of draught which is continuously displaced by the flow of the falling water, ignites this gas in such a way that a small flame appears at the mouth of the pipe and it will continue to burn like a lamp until the key is turned or until the water stops falling from the top bowl to the lower one. This flame in the apparatus is very small, and would not be enough to give a good light: but is very easy to light a taper with it: once this is done if the tap is closed the rest of the gas can be kept for more and more tests. This is why my little lamp is very useful as a lighter: here is some use of the flammable gas for the convenience and benefit of human life: keeping ready this lamp with a medium eletrophorus, it will be quicker and more convenient to ignite rather than with the flint of a tinder box and further you don’t have any unpleasant smells.

The same apparatus is very useful for experiments with my pistol. Taking from the pipe the bent brass wire, this is put into the neck of a small pistol, then the key is turned, so that the water flows from the top bowl to the lower one, and pushes the inflammable gas from the latter into the pistol to mix with normal air: after 15, 20 or more seconds (depending on the capacity of the pistol) it is fully charged and if a cork is put in it, the explosion will occur in the usual fashion. Thus one can do without the flint and other containers and an apparatus that you can put in your pocket, such as this, is useful for a variety of experiments.

What I described will surely be sufficient for Your Highness to succeed in doing experiments with the new apparatus. I will however, make a far more detailed description of this, as well as other lamps and similar apparatus which I have thought of and in greater part executed, in a long letter that I will take the liberty of addressing to you. In the mean time, I enclose a brief description and a sketch of a similar lighter, which according to some of my ideas outlined, about two years ago, and which I spoke about to Mr Barbier* of Strasbourg, when I passed by, has been made by him. Your Highness will be able to judge whether that or my new design is the better one.

I cannot end without telling you about some faults in the manufacture of the apparatus that I am sending you. Firstly, the glass is of bad quality and shape: one would need good crystal; but we cannot make it here. Then, the neck, which is below the lower bowl, and used to fit in a bottle where the flammable gas is kept, to allow it to pass and fill up the above mentioned lower bowl, this neck is too short for this transference, and too narrow to allow the gas to bubble through the water as it falls down. Therefore, it has been necessary to make a temporary neck to suit in place when one wants to transfer the gas. Due to the narrowness of the hole, one should, when the flammable gas is transferred from the full bottle to the lamp, keep it inclined and shake it well, if not, the obstruction will hinder the descent of the water and the ascent of the gas through this same hole.

It happens some times that the water having seeped into the pipe, when the tap is opened, this water is expelled from the mouth where one should ignite the gas, this does not allow the flame to appear or stops it: to avoid such inconvenience, as soon as I turn the key, I blow for a little while into the pipe to push back that little drop of water that might have collected there.

There are other small things that require some care, which, however, are not necessary to let you know, as Your Highness will know how to deal with them. They are those needed for similar portable and therefore delicate apparatus. As for a larger one, once it is put in its place and is working properly, it will always function well.

I have the honour of being your most obsequious servant. V.A.

P.S. I am thinking of going home in a few days; and will remain in Como until the end of October.

Your Most Humble, Your Most Devoted , Most Obsequious Servant

Alessandro Volta

P.S. If in the lower bowl the methane is introduced this will not ignite with the small electric spark: it is necessary to have the inflammable gas extracted from dissolving metals in acid. However, if one puts half of this metallic inflammable gas and half of methane, the little flame on the mouth of the pipe will appear notably bigger and of a light blue colour, and neither will it release a small spark.

Note: The mouth of the upper bowl must be open, or at least the screw on the cover not tightly closed, otherwise the water will not flow from the upper bowl to the lower one, even when the tap is opened.
