Letter 8 from Alessandro Volta to George 3rd Earl Cowper

Ho il piacere di partecipare a V.A. la risoluzione da me presa di fare nel venturo mese un giro in Toscana, che avrà per meta principalmente Firenze. Costì penso di tratternermi circa due settimane per vedere le cose rare, e soprattutto la raccolta di macchine del Gran Duca, e quella di V.A. Son pieno di consolazione per la sorte che avrò di conoscere di persona Lei, che mi si mostra tanto amorevole, e parziale; e per quella che spero di conferire a lungo intorno al nostro studio diletto, e sperienze nuove et. Mi lusingo di poterne mostrare a V.A. di tali intorno all’Elettricità; e porterò meco una memoria, che ho giusto terminata, restandomi sol di copiarla e metterla in netto. Questa memoria contenente le mie nuove sperienze elettriche la destinai fin dapprincipio per V.A. che potrà destinarla per la Società Reale di Londra, se Le par degna, e se così Le piace. Io credeva poterla terminare, e spedirgliela due mesi prima; ma la materia che mi è cresciuta tra mano, e che mi ha obbigato a ritoccarci più volte, e diverse altre occupazioni han portato tale ritardo.

I have the pleasure of sharing with Your Highness the decision I have taken to make a tour of Tuscany next month, mainly with the aim of going to Florence. I think that I will stay there for about two weeks to see unusual things, and above all the collection of apparatus belonging to the Grand Duke and that of Your Highness. I am very pleased for the chance that I will have of knowing you personally, who shows himself so friendly and interested: and for the opportunity I hope that I will have to spend a long time on our favourite study and new experiments etc. I flatter myself I will be able to show to Your Highness some of those about electricity; I will bring with me a dissertation that I have just finished and which I only have to redraft and copy. This dissertation containing the new experiments about electricity was meant from the beginning for Your Highness, you can forward it to the Royal Society in London if it is worth it and if it pleases you. I thought I could finish it and send it to you two months ago; but the content kept changing and I had to revise it many times, and many other businesses have kept delaying it.

I renew to Your Highness the signs of the most profound veneration and I have the usual honour of confirming myself.
