Aston. John Boteler
John Boteler gave a messuage at the Aston church gate, an almshouse and some other land to John Kent in 1564, on the basis of free socage. That means he paid rent of some sort but was not liable for military service. So far no further information about the almshouse has been located. It is not known what if any link existed between John and the almshouse.
Sir John was born in 1514, his father Sir Phillip Boteler being a senior member in the court of Henry VIII. Sir Phillip obtained the manor of Aston, which passed down his line, explaining the link between John and Aston. John married Griselda Roche in 1532 at Watton at Stone, where they then lived, producing at least 11 children. He was buried in Watton church in 1576, at the age of 61.
