Royal Review of the Hertfordshire Militia

Hatfield Park, 1800

By Llinos Thomas

Hertfordshire Militia, Hatfield House 1800. [DZ/119/6/342TT]
Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies

When George III came to Hertfordshire, no expense was spared. 200 families were given tickets to Hatfield Park, and captains could reserve wagons to ensure their friends had a good view. As well as this print of a painting presented to the Marquis of Salisbury by Richard Livesay, to commemorate the occasion, you can see a published ‘Narrative of the Preparations’ including the food prepared. Both survive in the collection of John Morice, held by Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies.
