This photo looks to me as if it might be of a pumping station on the New River, but it could be elsewhere. If you recognise it, we’d be delighted to hear from you.
This looks like the old pumping station and sewerage works that used to be down the Lower Harpenden Road. They ran from the old railway bridge to the junction of Chiltern Green Road. The houses just after the railway bridge used to grow dahlias and sell them. The ground was well manured!! As you passed the pumping station it always smelt terribly and often flooded that part of the road near the junction. I was only a 13 years old but we used to pass that way every Sunday to visit my Aunt and I’m almost sure it’s the same place.
