My Grandfather John Phillips Steele was born in Staffordshire the son of a pottery engraver.He moved to Rye where he opened a shop and started in metalwork. From Rye he moved at the invitation of Mr Barry Parker the architect – planner to Letchworth, to Letchworth and set up a business as a Silversmith. He left for Welwyn Garden city by 1933. He became a member of Welwyn Craftworkers Guild when it was formed in 1945. Between 1936 and 1940 he exhibited numerous pieces at The Paris exhibition and The Welsh Eisteddfod exhibition. They included a ‘Brass Tea Tray’, four copper bowls, a Copper Vessel, a pair of Silver Vases, a Silver Birthday Cup’ and Silver Honey Spoon’.
He died age 82 at home
