Elizabeth I’s signature on a pardon for Sir Edward Grimston, 1559 This is a rare example of Elizabeth’s original signature. The pardon is for Sir Edward, who was Controller of Calais when it fell to the French.

The amazing account of his capture, dramatic escape from the Bastille, and arrest for High Treason, written in his own hand, also survives in the Gorhambury collection. It makes gripping reading. Fortunately this document shows a happy ending!
