Olympic 2012 Recycled

A St Albans Legacy

Chris Blanch, Arts Development Officer, St Albans Arts

As a legacy of the Olympic Games, the Olympic Torch Relay and Paralympic Flame coming to St Albans in 2012, we invited 5 primary schools to create exciting artwork with the official materials, to not only promote recycling, but use the inspiration and memories of the Olympics.

Working with 5 artists, we transformed the branded banners and bunting into innovative artworks, ensuring that the materials were 100% recycled. This culminated in a celebratory launch at Fleetville Junior School in June 2013, where the finished pieces were showcased with The Mayor, Councillor Annie Brewster sharing their achievements.

Additionally, in January 2013 we launched a ‘Turbo Project’ with 20 Contemporary Applied Arts students from the University of Hertfordshire, who were challenged to produce design boards and a professionally, recycled structure in three weeks, again using the same branded materials.

Students presented their work to a judging panel and as an incentive; we offered a cash prize for the winners.  This body of work was subsequently displayed at Trestle Arts Base Gallery Café in June and then moved to The Colonnade at Verulamium Museum in July, where the exhibition was opened by The Mayor.
