Queen Elizabeth II visiting Stevenage on the 20th April 1959
Stevenage Museum P3249

The visit of Queen Elizabeth was soon after the completion of the “New Town” in Stevenage. She visited the New Town Square, and then named it “Queensway”.

This was commemorated with the unveiling of a panel on the clock tower, which still has an inscription on its face today.

  • My father Charles Sumpter was presented to the Queen that day on behalf of all the workers in Stevenage. He worked at Kings engineering.
