John Churchill Married Sarah Jennings

On the 2nd August, John Churchill, who became the Duke of Marlborough, married Sarah the daughter of Sir John Jennings of Holywell, St. Albans and Water End, Sandridge, (and granddaughter of Ralph Jennings.)

They lived at Holywell House at the foot of Holywell Hill, in St. Albans. They both played an active part in the life of the town, as Duke and Duchess of Marlborough.

  • Sarah was a fascinating character. In fact, she married John Churchill secretly sometime during 1677/1678, at the age of 18. The marriage was made public when Sarah became pregnant. This information comes from the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
