A Parlimentary Bill for the London to York Railway was passed by E. Dension, the chairman of the Great Northern Railway engaged by Mr. Brassey, who was the great railway engineer. Lewis Cubbitt were the contractors.

The Mimram Valley, in Digswell, Welwyn Garden City, had to be covered with a viaduct, which was around 2000 feet in length. Almost 5000 navvies had to be moved in, and around 5 million bricks were made there on the site for the forty arches situated there.
