Voices of World War II - The Evacuee Host

To mark VE Day, while under the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 lockdown, Hertfordshire Archives & Local Studies have created a number of audio recordings, illustrating various aspects of the county’s contribution to the war and its response to victory in 1945.

Operation Pied Piper was the name of the government’s scheme to temporarily move children and expectant mothers from their homes in large towns and cities to safer locations, usually in the countryside.  As you’ll lhear in this extract, sometimes it was interesting experience, as much for the host as the children.
