I Remember

George Barker

I was a boy during the First War and I remember one night being woken up by my parents and told to get dressed as a zeppelin had been reported flying nearby. Our family and all the neighbours hurried down to shelter under the Norton Road Railway Arch, along with a lot of the showmen from the fair. They had felt even less safe in their caravans than we had in our houses. But as we stood all together in the cold and dark I can remember thinking, ‘What’s all the fuss about anyway? Tomorrow its Baldock Fair!’
