gews corner/pentbrook

the late 60s

By David Goodey

Just to follow on the memories of Paul Haikney, I was at school with him in the late 60s and remember Ms Brooks, also her habit of polo mints.  I also remember Mr Dimmer a very good teacher and Mr Rann, although I never had him as a teacher, he was a formidable sight around the school.  I left in 1970 and went to Turnford then left in 1972 to move to Suffolk.

  • I was a pupil at Gews Corner School from 1958 to 1962. Happy memories!
Mr Oldacre was Headmaster and Mr Rann(complete with his Sargent Major batten ) was Deputy Head). Mr Powell was my first teacher , followed by Mr Dimmer -everybody’s favourite Teacher,Mrs Brooks (complete with polo mints). She took us for Country Dancing. Mr Rann was my last teacher. I remember the outside toilet block, the siren to summond the auxiliary fire brigade. Mrs Doberman ( Cliff’ Richards Auntie) who taught us sewing in the school canteen. Does anyone still have their canvas embroidered mat and cookery apron, peg bag?!
The staff room green cups and saucers, ciggy and coffee aromas! All completely worry free – happy days. Thank you to
    everyone

  • I have very fond memories of Gews Corner from 1966 to 1971. I remember Ian Andrews who taught me in my final 2 years before i went to Turnford School. Mrs Brooks slapped me on the legs, i can’t remember what I had done to deserve it! I was sent to her room but at least it wasn’t the slipper! She was a formidable teacher. Mr Andrews was very kind. I enjoyed the field trips to Scotland in 1970 and 71. I was a bit scared of Mr Klinckie but i guess that was a good thing. Taught me respect.

  • Mr Klinke and italic nibs – Grrr. Mrs Brooks was a great lady – typical staffroom odours of fags and coffee but took time to help us all. Cookie Brown – worked wonders on the Scotland trips – what I wouldn’t give for a glass of her lemonade now. Ian Andrews – thankyou for Narnia and Hanninal and The Romans – I must have missed punctuation lessons.

  • I remember Mr Klinky. He was the headmaster when I was there. I was Caroline Wallis back in the day.
I also remember Miss Budge. She hit my knuckles with a ruler. My mum went nuts!

  • I loved my time in Gews Corner. I fondly remember Mrs Brooks ( the smell of cigarettes and coffee always remain ) Mr Dimmer lovely gentle man and Mr Rann, strict but I did as I was told for the first and only time in my life. They all inspired me to go into teaching and I loved it. 1956-1962
Thanks to you all at News Corner

  • I went to Gew’s Corner from 1958 to 1960. My class teachers were Mr. (Jack) Dimmer ’58 and ’59 and R.H. Powell in 1960. Headmaster was Mr. Oldacre. Mr. Rann (‘Trot’) was a sinister being. I have visions of him punishing a boy in the assembly hall by whacking him on the back between the shoulder blades with the flat of his hand. A horrible vision that has stayed with me for 60 years!!
