First Post Office in Cheshunt

By Steve Whitlam

Norma Parrack submitted the following as part of Broxbourne Council’s Year of Heritage

“My grandfather Joseph Markwick had the first post office in Cheshunt in the late 19th century at 21 College Road.  He was also a master printer and photographer and he took official police crime photographs as well as portraits etc. One of his sons Arthur was killed during WW1 when with the British Expeditionary force and I still have the letter written to my grandfather by Arthur’s commanding officer.

My great grandfather George Markwick was the  Cheshunt ‘village’ policeman in the mid 19th century.”
