When my Great Grandmother died in her 30s, my Great Grandfather could not care for the younger children. My Great Aunt was placed at the Oval children’s home. After a couple of years visiting the Oval, my Great Grandfather and one of the ‘housemothers’ married and moved away from Harpenden. I came to live here in 1984 and found out these details when my Great Aunt (who was still alive then)asked if ‘Bunty’s’ the shop was still here, which it was then. She also told me tales of visiting Bunty’s – a thing she obviously delighted in!
