Entries from the Hitchin British Schools Infants log books between 1863 and 1900 illustrate the highs and lows of school life in the late 19th century.

The log books are kept at the Hitchin British Schools Museum.

Mumps, markets and baby desks

18th November 1887 ‘Several Children ill with the mumps and attendance poor owing to severe weather’ 

18th December 1896 ‘The new baby desks which were fixed up last week are proving to be very useful’  

20th December 1898 ‘Very poor attendance today chiefly due to it being Xmas market day’  

13th January 1899 ‘Closed school at 11 o’clock in order that the children might go to the market square to see the hounds start’
