Do you recognise this place?

The inscription on the back of this photo tentatively suggests “Hitchin?”  Do you recognise whether this is correct, and if so which street it is?  We’d love to hear from you.

  • This picture is of Tilehouse St with the junction of Old Park Rd on the right, just past the wall and gateway which I believe is the old Free School. The road on the left just past the gas lamp is the road to Gt Offley. The road is now blocked at this point by a wall, on the other side of which, is a roundabout which gives access to the Tilehouse St relief road. The houses on the left including the half timbered, just visible, still exist, the Swan with Two Necks was just around the corner on the same side but demolished to make way for the new road. The houses in the centre are gone as is the Waggon and Horses which adjoined them in Old Park rd, The Free School was still there when I was a boy but did not survive long, I think it must have been demolished around 1950, just behind the Free School in Paynes Park was an old farmhouse occupied by William’s scrap metal merchants, now demolished to make way for Cooper’s Yard housing complex.

  • This photograph is of Tilehouse St, the houses in the centre adjoin the Waggon and Horses PH (to the right hidden behind the wall of the Free School), opposite on the left of the picture also hidden was the Swan with Two necks PH. The houses on the left are still there, not the gas lamp, the wall and gateway on the right is gone, everything in the centre is gone, progress, it’s a wonderful thing
