The unusual cottages on Birds hill were built for Heatly Gresham, and engineering firm that made bodies for London taxi cabs. The mansard roofs gave the cottages a nickname of ‘Noah’s Ark cottages’. In the early 1980’s they were refurbished.

As the two photographs are of totally different parts of Bird’s Hill they do not show how Bird’s Hill has changed. The Dunkerley-designed mansard cottages (nos 2-40) (bottom photo) were 1905 Exhibition cottages and the Parker & Unwin group at the corner of Ridge Road (top photo) were built a year later.
