Letchworth Library

70th anniversary celebrations

By Daphne Knott

On a very snowy day in January 2009, Letchworth Library celebrated its 70th anniversary. Local residents and regular library users were invited to share a birthday cake and a cuppa on the big day. Like any 70 year old, the library has a fascinating history, snapshots of which were on display.

Some of the staff and users remembered the old days before computers, when all books had their own cardboard tickets and all the books were hardbacks. A few people there remembered some of the books which had been specially borrowed to show what was top of the lending list when the library was opened in 1939.
