Memories of Pattie Chapman
I came across the Pirton website and amazed to find that the Pollard cottages are still standing .
My grandmother Pattie Chapman worked as a housekeeper for the Pollard family. She lived in Lancaster Avenue in Hitchin and in the early 60s moved to the Almhouse in Crab Tree Lane on the left of the photo.
I was born in Clifton in 1950 and used to catch the bus to Hitchin often for a horse riding lesson with Mr Cunningham and Judith in the Wratten and then later in a field off the wibbly wobbly lane. I would then get another bus as my parents didn’t drive into Pirton to spend time with my lovely grandma. She was a super cook and always fed me well and was a superb dressmaker.
Lovely memories and sadly my father was an only child and since his passing have no more relatives for any information. I can’t even track down her grave in one of the Hitchin cemeteries but have a keepsake document informing grandma of her husbands death at war when my father was only a small child.
A sad document but means so much.
