It was decided that Cumberland House, the home of the Peake family on Redbourn Common, needed a new water tank in the roof in the 1930’s.  It was decided that this was the best way to get it up there!  I don’t know whether today’s laws on Health & Safety would allow this!

  • I found this picture most amusing given that this method of moving a heavy water tank describes very well the approach taken by following Peake generations! My great-grandfather was R.C. Peake who would have commissioned the work being done in the photograph. I recognise later, similar approaches made by my grandfather T.V. and my father C.V. when confronted by such practical problems!
