First Automobile Fatality

The first automobile fatality in the area was outside The Chequers P.H. on 7th June, 1908.  Fred Allen, who worked and lived at Bohemia Farm, off the St. Albans Road, was the unfortunate victim as a cyclist.  A white cross marks the spot at the juntion of Chequers Lane and the St. Albans/Redbourn Road.
